Flowers are a very romantic image and it is hard to think about love and anything related to it without conjuring up floral connotations in particularly the rose which has always been synonymous with love and romance. In western cultures, it is customary to send roses on special occasions like birthdays, Valentine’s day and anniversaries so it is not surprising that roses have become a universal symbol of love. Perhaps this is why rose tattoos have always been popular but this is one trend that shows no sign of waning. There are actually different meanings behind these designs, which vary depending on the style in which the rose is portrayed.
As discussed, everyone can associate the rose with love and this is its most common symbolism. If rose tattoos are depicted on a stem without thorns then this generally has romantic connotations however the addition of thorns add rather a different meaning to the design. Perhaps the individual is expressing a warning to proceed with care as they may have been hurt by love in the past and wary of going there again. This may served as a reminder of the risks of exhilarating love that can be agony as well as ecstasy for some. On a more positive note roses also depict beauty although with thorns this may mean the person perhaps does not feel beautiful or that their beauty is untouchable, for others to admire from a distance only.
There are many different colors for rose tattoos and they do not just need to be done in shades of red. The color of the rose can also have a different meaning and while red obviously signifies true love, respect, passion and romance pink symbolizes a gentle and graceful individual. Orange roses are a sign of excitement while coral represents desire and white of course means purity. Alternatively black roses not surprisingly represent darkness and death. Yellow is for friendship as does a pale shade of peach while purple is used to signify love at first sight and blue has connotations of fantasy and impossibility. Different combinations of colors can change the meaning too, for example white and red signifies unity, justice and mercy while red and yellow can be a congratulatory symbol. Whatever color and style you opt for as long as it looks good it does not need to have any profound symbolism as this is one design that is sure to attract attention and impress those who see it.
